Children’s Trusts are a new way of working. They will bring together senior representatives from a range of services for children and young people in Redcar and Cleveland so that they can work together to improve the lives of all children and young people.
The Trust, launched on 12th December 2006, will build upon examples of joint working that are already taking place, such as Sure Start, Behaviour Education Support Team and the Children’s Fund. It will identify priorities to improve the lives of children and young people and be the main commissioning body to delivery jointly planned services.
The Trust Board meets every 3 months and includes elected members with an interest and responsibility for education and children’s services. Schools and GPs are represented as well as the Primary Care Trust, the Learning and Skills Council, the Borough Council, Probation, Police, Local Safeguarding Children’s Board and the voluntary and community sector.
The Trust makes it the responsibility of everyone working with children, young people and families to work together to make things better. Frontline workers will have a key role to play in ensuring new ways of working are used to promote children’s well-being.
The Trust will have a key responsibility to deliver the outcomes detailed in the Children and Young Peoples Plan. It provides an opportunity to develop a partnership that is relevant to local needs and to develop a coordinated response to meet those needs. Children, young people and families will be given opportunities to identify what they need and the Trust must ensure that services are accessible and responsive.

The Children and Young People’s Plan for Redcar and Cleveland is the single, over-arching strategic plan which sets out how all organisations will work together to improve the lives of children and young people across the borough. The plan shapes how the police, council, schools, voluntary and community sector, NHS, probation services and Local Safeguarding Children Board will deliver services to children and young people over a defined period of time and in line with the national Every Child Matters outcomes framework.
The plan covers services which affect children and young people aged from 0-19, over 19s who have left care and young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities up to the age of 25. The plan is developed, resources, implemented and monitored by Redcar and Cleveland Children and Young People’s Trust.
For further information on the Children and Young People’s Plan contact Lesley King, Business Development Manager, Directorate of Adult and Children’s Services, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, on 01642 444378.
