Local Enterprise Growth Initiative

The Redcar and Cleveland Partnership was successful in securing Government funding through the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI). LEGI is a Government programme to boost business and enterprise in deprived areas. The local delivery programme forms a major element of the Sustainable Communities block of the Borough's new Local Area Agreement.

The Redcar and Cleveland LEGI has the following objectives:

  • to increase total entrepreneurial activity among the population in deprived local areas;
  • to support sustainable growth and reduce the failure rate of locally owned businesses in deprived areas; and
  • to attract appropriate inward investment and franchising into deprived areas making use of local labour resources.

The Redcar and Cleveland LEGI will be delivered in:

  • Greater Eston;
  • West Redcar; and
  • Rural East Cleveland.

The LEGI will target:

  • young people;
  • economically inactive;
  • women; and
  • voluntary and community groups.

The £10.9M LEGI programme will be delivered through 7 workstreams:

Enterprise in Education - an integrated curriculum development, enterprise generation programme in primary, secondary, further education and youth services;

Harness the Passion - the identification and nurturing of people who have talent for business;

Enterprise Growth – People and their Business - taking people forward into business though support and mentoring programmes;

Enterprise Growth – Premises and Places - the provision of appropriate premises and incubation in Greater Eston, Redcar and East Cleveland;

Enterprise Growth – Sectors and Inward Investment - focus on support to enterprise development in two key sectors (renewables/recycling and tourism) plus related investment attraction;

Social Enterprise - development of new social enterprises, looking particularly at opportunities for shifting public sector services to social enterprises through a Development Trust; and

Enterprise Marketing - a co-ordinated, long term communication programme to inspire people and business to consider enterprise opportunities and raise interest in development opportunities.

Redcar and Cleveland’s LEGI is managed by a Board of membership and for further details on any aspect of the programme contact the LEGI office on 01642 – 495741.
